| Thomas Santorelli | Long Island Film Festival Creates Pioneer Film Awards Signed on: Sun 01 Aug 2010 16:58:34 MDT The Long Island Film Festival has created awards named after pioneers and other industry notables of American cinema who have made major contributions to the industry while living on Long Island. Many of the early pioneers lived in the Bay Shore-Brightwaters area and worked out of the Vitagraph branch studio located at 94 Fourth Avenue, Bay Shore in 1916. The subjects of the awards stretch from the silent era to contemporary industry contributors with a Long Island connection. Along with presentations named after early pioneers, notables such as Mario Puzo a long time resident of Bay Shore and John Williams, born on Long Island will also be subjects of the awards that will be presented starting this year. Thomas Santorelli, Long Island Film Festival’s Vice President is a historian of early American cinema and was involved in the renovation of the Vitagraph building in 2004-2005. The studio was converted to loft apartments and the project was completed in 2006. Ralph Ince, one of Vitagraph’s top directors had a home built in Brightwaters and was head of the Bay Shore branch studio in 1916. Ince is best remembered today as Diamond Pete Montana, the gangster that (Rico) Caesar Enrico Bandello (Edward G. Robinson) looked up to in the grandfather of the modern crime film, Little Caesar (1930). The awards will be in the category of actors for both male and female, directors, both male and female, cinematography, screenplay, film scoring and a Shelly Award for Woman Filmmakers created by LIFF founder, Christpher Cooke and named after Adrienne Shelly, who was born in Jericho and died in New York City in 2006. To see more awards and the pioneers that they are named after log onto www.lifilm.org and click on LIFF Pioneer Awards. |
